Urban Outfitters: Scuba, Military & Faux Fur

I was recently lured into my local Urban Outfitters store by an "extra 50% off sale items" sign out front.  And while I didn't find any worthwhile sale items to blog about, I did try on a few other things, including a seriously small skirt... the BDG Zipper Miniskirt in XS ($38):

I couldn't believe how small this was!  I'd say the XS is probably similar to a size 10 kids skirt unless you like your skirts really really skin-tight.  I also grabbed a size S in another color to try because even that looked tiny as well:

To be honest I'm not sure which size fits me better!  They both feel quite short though (or maybe I'm just not used to having skirts hit me at that length).  The material is a stretchy knit, and almost reminds me of the recent LOFT scuba material except not quite as thick.  They only had those two colors in store, but a quick search online showed that it's available in seven different colors.  I hate paying retail so I passed, but maybe if it goes on sale :)

Next was the military-esque Collection Officer Coat in XS ($79), which looked like it ran small as well:

Sorry about the grainy pics, my iPhone picture quality is usually better, I think their mirror was dirty or something. The coat looks pretty good in front, but side view was still a bit boxy and the sleeves were a little roomy. I also wasn't sure about the rather drabbish green color, but it also comes in a blackish grey online:

And finally, since I can't seem to find the H&M faux fur collar that I saw on ExtraPetite (or any other H&M items for that matter), I tried on the UO version - the Pins and Needles Faux Fur Collar ($28):

The color is a darker brown and it seems a bit shorter, but otherwise it's pretty much the same idea.  I couldn't make myself pay almost twice the price though since the H&M version is only $15, so again I passed.

I couldn't find any juicy UO coupon codes, except for GIFTED which gives 10% off full-price items, and wasn't tempted enough to make an order.  Will be biding my time and browsing online in the meantime, waiting for a good sale and/or coupon codes! :)

  1. Oo, we haven't heard from U.O. in a while on the petite front. Nice review! The first skirts do look tiny and in the pics XS and S look about the same but something seems off about the fit...like it's curve hugging but ends at an awkward length and doesnt lie smooth on the hips or something. Maybe it's just me!

That jacket is also cute but it looks almost like a little cropped jacket in the model pic! I would've definitely picked up a collar for you but I didn't think there would be any need for it in southern California! What temperature would warrant it? : )

  2. oh wow that skirt runs tiny...can't believe it fits you so well. i think for you i'd go with the xs. i don't think it's too short at all. i like both colors! if there's a good coupon, i'd go with both since they are so basic and i think they'd go with everything.

  3. Yay! I am so glad you found a great-fitting skirt! Hope it goes on sale soon so you can get it! Definitely go with the xs!

  4. The skirts both fit you super well, but I'd go with the xs too. Also great find on the faux fur collar!! I need to stop by my OU to see if they have it as there's no H&M here. Thanks for the review!

  5. I love the fact that the skirt comes in so many colours! I'd probably get it if it was on sale. Do you think the small was still too tight though? I'm not sure what size you are, but if I get it, maybe I should get a medium after seeing how tight it is on you. The skirt will shrink in the wash!

The fur collar is nice and I like the floral detail inside, but I think the H&M one looks a lot better. I'd pick it up for you if you want! : )

  6. I actually think the skirt isn't too short on you. But what matters is that you're comfortable with it. Weirdly enough, they both look to fit you the same. Maybe it's due to the skirt color?

Fur is all the rage right now and I think the faux-fur collar goes well with the jacket you have on. I thought it looked better with the jacket than the jacket by itself =P

Thanks for the reviews, it reminded me that I should hit up UO sometime soon :)

  7. Cute skirts! It looks like the S fits similarly to XS but is just a touch longer so maybe get S? I really like the fur collar on you, hope you find it at H&M for the $15 price point!

  8. PAG - Hmm I think you may be seeing the shirt that I have tucked in underneath, that's why the hips are a lil bumpy. But yes, I wish it was lined because anything that's tucked in will likely show (esp in the lighter colors) because it's so figure-hugging. And about the fur collar... do I need it in SoCal weather? Not really, but when do I ever really "need" anything anyway :P

Ping, Michelle, kileen - Looking at the pics, I agree that the XS looks better too, but I really hope it doesn't shrink any in the wash because it's borderline too tight as is!

The Little Dust Princess - I think depends on where you like your skirt to sit... the XS hits me higher at the true waist, which I kind of liked. But the S felt more comfortable and a bit more modest :P i'm not entirely sure how we compare size-wise either, but with this skirt I'd say when in doubt, size up?

Cee - I guess it doesn't really look like there's much difference, the XS felt tighter on though?

SewPetiteGal - I wonder if the S is actually any longer... I think it's a little wider at the waist so sits a bit lower on my hips. Probably should've held the two together to compare... darn!

  9. The skirts do look good on you! And the faux fur collar is good too....so many great finds at UO. Too bad I'm on a ban =(

  10. the fur is so adorable! i never seem to find suitable items at UO simply because i think everything is too overpriced D: they do have some cute items but i'm usually too distracted by their cool gifts and obnoxious books and furniture hehe.

  11. I think the skirts look great on you! and they're not short at all. The xs and s look almost identical, but the s looks a tiny tiny bit longer. And the fur collar was adorable on you as well. But yea, I think stuff at UO is way too overpriced, I always wait until it goes on sale to get anything.

  12. I love U.O but I oh so hate the fact that they never seem to run discount codes and their sales are weird at times.

  13. I can't tell the difference between XS and S for the skirt. I prefer the lighter color and I like the fact that XS is "too small" for you :) I hope it goes on sale soon. Hopefully, they'll have a juicy sale for the upcoming holiday seasons

  14. I can't really tell that the S was bigger than the XS but I like the XS better I think. The coat you tried on was also adorable but the sleeves seem really big for you. I am eying some items on sale at UO so am crossing my fingers for a good sale soon.

  15. The sleeve length of the jacket is so awkward. These 2/3 sleeves can really only be styled w/wearing a long sleeve underneath, IMO.

If the skirt is unlined, definitely not worth full price. I stopped buying unlined skirts for the reason that it looks bumpy when you tuck in your blouse. and there are always better options out there for lined skirts.

I like fur collars, but only if it's attachable. I wonder how practical these detachable ones are. Like when you take off your jacket, you have to take off the collar separately too, right? It's practically a fur scarf, no?

  17. I'm going to say what everyone else has said so far, Wow! What a tiny skirt to fit you so well! It really looks good on you and I think the xs looks a little slimmer through the sides. The small looks like it might bell on you just a teensy. I thought you were trying on the fur trimmed jacket at the loft when I first glanced at your pictures, I really like that fur collar. The jacket itself looks big on you. Thanks for doing this review, I always forget about Urban Outfitters for some reason.

  18. A skirt that could fit you so well, I can imagine how tiny it is. I can't tell the difference of xs and small but like the xs color better. oh I looove the collection officer coat in green color, it would go well with the faux fur collar. Hope they'll be on sale soon.

  19. -Rubs eyes- holy schmokes, PXXS wearing a size Small and fits alright?! Must be a really tiny skirt. =0D I do agree that you should wait for it on sale. If the XS and the Small fits that well on you I think a lot of people wouldn't be able to fit in the other sizes. I forecast that it will go on sale.

Wow, I love the green jacket with that faux fur trim! Not a lover of fur but you guys sure know how to rock it.

  21. Ooh, I love the colour of the faux fur scarf! I have the snood version of the one frm H&M and I find the colour on that one more washed out/cheaper looking. This one looks much better IMO!

    Have a lovely weekend!
