Mustard Yellow Vs. Gold

Tallying the votes so far for the J.Crew cardigans from the last post, it seems like the majority favorite was the Gold - which was actually my first choice as well since I'd been wanting a mustard yellow cardigan for a long time.  I initially thought that it was close enough... until I spotted a truly mustardy yellow cardigan from a Banana Republic outlet store a little while back.

And look at the difference!

I love that the BR cardigan seems to be the exact color of Jean's lovely Gap jacket, and that's what convinced me to buy even though the fit was rather long.  After picking it up, I subsequently spotted the same cardigan on Vicky here and Sydney here.

A few more views of the BR zip cardigan:

And the J.Crew Merino Chiffon Placket Cardigan again in Gold:

And for a direct comparison:

I think fit-wise, the J.Crew cardigan is probably more flattering.  But I do love the mustardy goodness of the BR sweater.  What do you think... should I keep either or both?  And thanks again to everyone who voted on the last post, based on your feedback I'll be keeping the Mansfield Blue, but am still thinking about the Heather Graphite & Weathered Wood.

  1. hm, I really like both cardis, but if I had to pick one, I would say to go with the J. Crew placket one. There's just something about the ruffles that makes it really flattering and feminine. and i actually like the shorter length on you too. :)

    cute and little

  2. I think the gold J Crew definitely looks more flattering. I feel like it can stand alone with other basic colors (like your white top) whereas the more lemony-mustard of the BR cardi really needs something else to make it pop. Maybe it would look cute with something navy blue or deep green under it? I say keep the J crew and return the BR.

:) BTW I love your post with all 4 colors of the J Crew cardis. I bought the Weathered Wood and Gold asa well! And a similar cardi (cielo or something) in a charcoal grey!

  3. I think they are two completly different types of cardis that could be worn for different purposes, so you could get away with keeping both! I could see the BR one being worn more casually. But if I had to pick one, it would be the J Crew!

  4. I agree with Tara's comment. They are completely different styles (as well as color) The JCrew looks like a muted pumpkin tone to me. I like the JCrew best for fit and color, but that's just personal preference. They're both really cute.

  5. I agree with Tara and Callandra - they are completely different styles. I would wear the J.Crew one with dressier outfits and save the BR one for casual weekend clothes.

  6. I would say keep both!! One is very casual and the other get be dressed up a little more.

I don't know how I missed your last post but I just saw it now - love your little animation :)

  7. Liane, keep both! I have both and love them. They are very different like others have commented. I wouldn't even think about comparing the two. The BR sweater looks a lot longer on you than on me, I must have a longer torso, but I think the longer style looks great on you too. Let us know what you decide.

  8. I actually like the mustardy one more! The longer style looks great on you. Keep both!

  9. I see more mustard yellow on the Jcrew cardigan (for fun...just compare this with the actual mustard hha)and you might be able to see which color is more closer. The BR seems a bit more mustard-green?? But both they look really nice on you, I particularly love the Jcrew.

  10. I like both sweaters on you. With the j.crew one, you can just wear a plain cami underneath, and would make a lovely outfit due to its ruffle lining. With the BR one, I like to pair mine with tops that have ruffles/pleats. I can really show off the ruffles by adjusting the zipper on the BR sweater.

  11. I say keep both. You look great in both. I own the JCrew one and I'm looking for a sweater just like the BR one. I love that color, I think it's casual fun. What size is your sweater and how much did you pay for it? I wonder if they still have some. I'll have to go to the outlets soon.
Btw, I also like how the heather graphite JCrew looks on you.

  12. I like them both. They're both completely different styles as the BR one is more casual. : )

  13. Oh and by the way...would have never guessed you have braces! Great thing that you have the barely noticeable ones.

  14. I agree and fully support a full closet - keep both! I love the mustard color of the BR sweater but the J.Crew is more feminine. You could wear it with a skirt and belt combo, making it a totally functional addition to your closet :)

  15. The BR sweater is a cool color, but the style is a bit uninteresting, in my opinion. I didn't like that color JC cardigan before, but when you compare it to the BR sweater, it does look more appealing. The fit is definitely more well-suited to your frame.

  16. I rarely say this but I vote keep both lol. Only because I love my Gap mustard sweater for casual wear tossed over a print or pattered top and the Gap jeggings. I think it's awesome that you guys found a BR outlet sweater in the same color that fits pretty darn decently right off the rack. It wasn't too much $ at the outlet right?

As for colors in general I like mustard better than gold. Mustard just goes with so many colors that you wouldn't expect it to, and it makes plain black and gray outfits pop. Oh how I wish J.Crew made more XXS cardis in mustard, or their version "bronzed ochre."

  17. The color is different enough that you could probably keep both and get lots of uses out of them. The Gap one being more casual and the J.Crew for dressier occasions. I do think the Gap one is kind of long, but may look better unzipped. Both flatter your skin tone but I do like the J.Crew gold one more!

  18. I like the J.Crew more. =) But keep both if you like them!

  19. I like the J.Crew one more- it's just prettier. Both diff sweaters but I think the J.Crew one will get more use :)

  20. The J.Crew fits your body better and the Gap one just okay. I'd say keep the J.Crew one and find a more flattering casual jacket. Why go for average when you can find an amazing one later on? At least, that's my thinking. =)

  21. I vote for both! I think the color difference is noticeable and the styles are completely different too. I LOVE yellow on you, and the Gap one looks SO comfy!

  22. Is it weird that I've always thought yellow washes out the Asian skin tone? That being said, I think the J.Crew one looks better because (a) it's a better fit (b) the color doesn't wash you out as much

  23. I love the comparison of the two cardigans! I like the J.Crew color and shorter length on you better. The warmer gold color suits your skin tone better and the shorter length makes you look taller. The BR one is great for casual wear though. And honestly, that's how long I like my tops. But seeing the two lengths on you, I may have to reconsider and go shorter! Keep both!

  24. I also vote for both. The BR cardigan can be dressed down and the JCrew one can be dressed up. Although I love both of them, I do think the Jcrew cardigan is more flattering for your figure. Have a great weekend!

  25. i vote for both! i love the length of the BR sweater --great to pair with leggings too. i have to say they are both flattering on you.

  26. Like most of the ladies have said...both! :) Both colors look amazing on you!

I can see the BR sweater being worn with jeggings and a cute necklace...something to wear out while running errands, or just hanging out in a casual atmosphere.

  27. I actually prefer the style of the BR sweater, but I prefer the color ofthe J.Crew cardigan. You should still keep the BR sweater because it looks much warmer. I like the length of it, but my torso is longer than yours. If the BR one isn't costly, then I say keep!

BTW do you remember if it came in multiple colors? Hmmm I need to check the BR outlet next time...

  28. Well, I'm anti this Jcrew cardigan from the beginning. hahaha. I didn't understand the obsession (mb b/c of the luxe mat'l??). It looks the same on all the petites. big and unfitted around the midsection.

As far as the BR cardi, I'd have to see it open on you.

Lookie here, I'm the only one who is iffy on both. =D

  29. I love the Jcrew cardigan on you. It fits much better and I like the color better too. I'm not a fan of the Banana Republic one. It's so long and I think the Jcrew one is a much better style for you.

  30. Hey! I just wanted to comment and introduce myself since I just started following you. Being petite myself, I love to find pieces that actually fit as well. I have the SAME BR cardigan in maroon and gray. :]

  31. I like both colors but I like the style of the J. Crew more. The chiffon ruffle is such a great detail and I like the length of it on you too.

  32. Oooh- I love them both so much! I'm partial to the mustard cardigan though - I recently got a mustard cardigan and it really matches with EVERYTHING. It's amazing.
