Tory Burch Reva Flats: Black or Gold?

On the top of my shoe wish list (other than boots which are impossible to find so far), is a nice pair of flats to wear with my skinny jeans, especially the fabulous Gap legging jeans.  I usually don't wear flats and therefore am not very familiar with the brands out there, so I went straight to the cult classic... Tory Burch!  This is definitely a splurge for me, but I've been coveting it for so long that I decided to just pull the trigger.

I couldn't decide between a classic black and a more fun neutral pair:

TB Classic Reva Ballerina Flat in Black with Silver Logo

So I got both!  And of course now I'm tempted to keep both lol.  Here's a head to head comparison!

Front & Side View:

Close up:

On the feet:

The lizard print in Gold Petal is actually more of a cream color with specks of gray, and feels slightly stiffer and less flexible than their classic ballerina style.  I got them both in size 5.5, and the black runs true to size while the lizard print runs slightly big.  It doesn't slip off my feet thanks to the elastic part in the back, but I think I might be able to fit into a size 5.    True to the TB reputation however, they both do feel reeeally comfortable on, although I haven't worn them outside yet so I don't know how they'll fare after a long day.

Now my dilemma... Black is classic and goes with everything, including black tights/leggings for winter.  Gold petal has a more interesting print but is still versatile, and the neutral lighter color elongates leg line which is especially helpful in flats.  Which pair should I choose?  And dare I say both?!  :P

  1. Ahh, I love the gold one :) It's so hard to come across one that looks so good :) Usually the gold ones look tacky!

  2. I am a sucker for voting in favor of wardrobe staples - so if you are only keeping one pair I'd say keep the black ones since they'll go with everything. The gold is cute and I am sure it'll will get worn if you do keep it but it's just not as timeless as the black. :)

  3. If I have to choose one pair I would go with the neutral pair.

  4. i love the black one. so shiny and classic and wearable! of course most of all my flats are boring black but they're a staple for me

  5. Black looks FANTASTIC on you! I soo want a pair now! Thanks for sharing this fun post!

  6. If this your first and only pair of ballet flats, I would go with the black, it's much easier to wear them and they won't go out of style as easily as the lizard ones. But, to be honest, I would, again if I wanted to pick just one pair of flats, rather go for a classic pair with a simple ribbon bow in the front rather than a silver buckle. I find the buckle on the Tony Burch's a little bit too much, especially its size that doesn't seem to look right on small sized shoes. (I can imagine this buckle to look great on size 8 or 9 shoes, but unfortunately they use the same size buckle on all shoe sizes which I find doesn't work for very small sizes, but maybe I am just too picky). Bloch has very nice classical flats and also http://www.prettyballerinas.us/ is a great source for classical flats.

  7. Those are sooo cute on you! I have been coveting TB flats too and was wondering whether to get black or gold as well. I have a pair of light gold flats right now and they are really versatile. I wore them more than any black flats I've had because I think they give some fun life to an outfit and the neutral color is still conservative enough to go with everything. I'd keep both, honestly, because if they look great and feel comfortable you'll wear them for years! You also need a black pair too. Lol I'm probably no help but when in doubt, keep both!

  8. I will keep both! Even though they are the same design but they look so different in each color. Love those shoes!!

I often find myself in the same dilemma when i like an item in different colors. I end up getting black in most situations simply because black goes with everything. In your case, both hold their uniqueness and style. Tough call!!

  9. both looks great..but I do love the black one!!!! it's gorgeous!!!

  10. I like the lighter one for the reason you mentioned. I have black and animal print flats, and the black definitely shortens and is kinda harsh looking. That being said - if you can afford both, keep both :)

  11. I really like both! You'll definitely get a lot of wear out of the black ones as they're a classic color and can go with anything. The cream ones are absolutely beautiful though and can go with more neutral outfits where black shoes may stand out a little too much.

So if it's not a big stretch, I would say keep both. :)

  12. keep both! hahaa!
black does go with everything and i love the print & color of the other one. what a diliema!
if you have never worn flats before, i'd say start off with just one. i have a few pairs of nice expensive flats, but i rarely wear them. no matter what brand they are, its not comfortable for me because i'm so used to heels.

  13. I like the black reva flats, but I prefer a gold medallion instead of silver. The combo of black and silver is too "cold," but a gold medallion will warm up the harsh black leather.

The "gold" ones, aka Lizard embossed, looks like an odd pattern. I say if you want a pattern, python or leopard are better neutrals.

  14. Oh you might consider checking out this review by Cher: http://afashiondeliberation.blogspot.com/2010/07/shoe-search.html

I've actually heard that the Revas are uncomfortable til you've worn them in and that the leather will stretch a bit.

  15. BOTH. And here is my reasoning: one to go with silver and one to go with gold days. Although the gold ones look silver to me.

I actually bought both black with silver medallion and black with gold initially, but I found that it hurts the top of my foot at the end of the day so i returned a pair (the gold). So wear the ones you're most likely to keep, then if they are truly comfortable on you all day, keep the other one.

TBs are also one I would wait to pricematch at nordstrom once there's a saks or bloomingdales 20% off sale.

  16. I like the neutral lizard pair! It really spruces up any outfit, and it's just as versatile as black, just more interesting. I don't have a pair of TB flats, but some of my girlfriends who have them say they hurt after some walking. Just a word of caution - I'd definitely wear them around the house for a good few hours to make sure they're not painful.

  17. Hmm, I'm always hesitant about expensive flats because for some reason, I think they just don't LOOK as expensive and they don't wear comfortably equal to their cost. I mean, if they hurt (as aubrey linked a blog post to) then it's not really worth it at any cost, right?

To decide between the two, I like the lizard because it will match more casual outfits and flats to me are pretty casual. They look fancier and more interesting!

  18. I love the lizard ones! I say those are a keeper, but...if you want more wear, go with the black. Also, keep in mind if you wear more gold or silver. And just imagine how much LOFT stuff you can get if you return a pair! Lol!

I also want to share my experience with these shoes. I have them in a size 7.5. For reference, I usually fall between 7 or 7.5. So here it goes: When I wear them without any socks or tights, the bottoms of my feet hurt after wearing them all day for work, plus my heel slips out. Solution, added a flower petal to prevent my foot from sliding forward and to add comfort. That created a new problem, my toes were getting crunched on top by the hard metal above them. :( So, I have found out that they only work for me with tights and on days at work when I know I can sit every now and then.

So...be warned if these are a full day kind of shoes. I am assuming that part of my problem is the size may be too large, but that does not change the fact that the bottoms of my feet hurt. Also...mine are about two years old, so maybe the padding has changed?

  19. Huh, I had actually heard that Revas are uncomfortable. But I'm so glad you didn't find that to be true! I would say the black (especially if you don't own any black flats) because it goes with everything!

  20. I'm with Cee...I'm surprised that they have a reputation for being comfy? Almost everyone I know thinks they are uncomfortable (myself included lol). After I wore them in (took about 2 months) however, they are now comfy!

I would go with the black although the second pair is fun. Also I already asked on Twitter but did you use the Saks F&F? Those F&F's are always great for Tory shoe purchasing.

I think we have similar sized feet, so I encourage you to size down to the 5's. I got 5's and they have now stretched out to fit me perfectly. My wedges in sz 5.5 however, have stretched out to be so loose they fall off my feet!

  21. Well if you decide to only keep one pair, I would choose the black. It is very classic. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oooh, I like the gold petal but ultimately they both look great.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you can splurge, I say keep both. I think the classic black is a great keep, but the gold petal is really nice.

such a tough choice... unless both is an option. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks everyone for your opinions and advice! So far black is winning over gold petal by about 2:1 (not counting people who say both hehe). If I can get a price match and extra 20% off, I think I might just keep both! :)

Rainy Days - I was pleasantly surprised by the color too, definitely not very gold but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Anonymous @5:55 - That's a good point about the buckle being proportionally bigger on smaller sizes. I hadn't thought of that.

Ping - It doesn't seem very intuitive that flats would be less comfortable than heels! But I think I know what you mean... for me a small heel is probably the most comfortable compared to flats or high heels.

Aubrey - I did see that review by Cher, but she does seem to have a lot of trouble with shoes in general, so I was hoping I wouldn't run into the same problem. I see what you mean about black & silver being cold, but I'm just not really into gold hardware or jewelry so that's why I went with silver.

Anon @10:13 - Thanks for the tip about price matching! And I think I will take your advice about only wearing one pair first to see how I like them, just in case they become uncomfortable so I'm not stuck with two pairs.

Jen - My pain tolerance is pretty low in terms of shoes, and shoes that hurt don't get a lot of wear from me. I had thought that these were really comfortable, that's why I was willing to splurge on them.

Michelle, Cee & PAG - I figured since they're so expensive why would so many people buy them if they're uncomfortable... but now you're got me worried about comfortable these really are! Will definitely try just one pair first before I decide to keep both.

  25. @PetiteXXS: haha, you're so funny. Cher's search for the perfect flats did seem quite lengthy & troublesome for her.

I'll credit TB Reva flats as being very cute, but, in my personal opinion, people buy TB Reva flats not b/c they're known for comfort (why then, wouldn't we all wear Birkenstock or TOMS?). It is branded as a luxury item, originally gaining a loyal following by Tory Burch's own circle of aristocratic New York friends, that has now risen to the ranks of being considered classic and iconic. That logo is instantly recognizable and suggests the product is "designer" or high-end; not necessarily b/c it has a reputation for being comfortable.

  26. I'm also considering buying a TB reva flats for myselft. I also had heard about TB flats being uncomfortable. This is something that is holding me from purchasing them. But I'd suggest the black ones, very classic style. And I also prefer the silver medallion over the gold one :)

Also if you would like take a look @: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/attilio-giusti-leombruni?origin=brandindex

I'm looking into this ones as well and I must say they feel very very comfortable when I tried them on.

  27. In my opinion if you had to choose I like the gold flats better. The famous logo is a little too much of a stark contrast in the black. However, I like them both. LOL and honestly I think they are both classic so you would get a lot of wear with them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would keep both if I could, but I like the gold ones if I could only choose one...you can find black flats almost anywhere, but the gold ones are unique!
Oh, I just added you to my blog roll :)

  29. When I first got my patent Revas, they really, really hurt (near the edges where my pinky toe is) and where the back scrunched band dug into my heel. There were days at work where I used to slip them off because the pressure on the front of my toes was too painful! This really confused me because my feet are naturally very narrow so I wasn't sure what was wrong. After spending the money on them, I kept forcing myself to put up with it. Agree with PAG, that they did inevitably get comfortable, but the memory kept me from picking up another pair this season. Let us know how your's go! They *are* really cute and super versatile. I just think there are much cheaper and more comfortable options.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would def go with the black- more versatile and will match with more stuff :)

I bought the coconut ones in these last year and then just couldn't keep them because I couldn't force myself to wear flats..hehhee
