Eye-Fi Review

Here's a nifty little tech toy I wanted to share with my fellow petite bloggers and anyone else who has a digital camera.  I was feeling down a while ago so hubby decided to get me a present to help me feel better.  He noticed that it always took me forever to take pics for the blog, so he got me this to make the process a little easier:

Eye-Fi Connect X2 4 GB Class 6 SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-4CN

It's just like the SD memory card that you use in your camera, but any picture you take will wirelessly transmit to your computer instantly, so you don't have to connect your camera to the computer or take out the card to download the pics when you're done.

It features an "Endless Memory" mode where it'll automatically delete pics, starting from the oldest, to make room for new ones.  That way you never to have to go through and manually delete pics to make room, and it knows to only delete the pics already safely transmitted to your computer.

One useful application, especially for bloggers, is to have it transmit to a mobile device like a laptop or an iPad that's placed wherever you're taking your pics... then you can see the full-size images right away as you're taking them!  I think you can also have it to upload select or all pics to many popular online galleries without needing a computer, which is ideally good for traveling.

One caveat is that you do need to have Wi-Fi, either at home or at hotspots like Starbucks, Barnes & Nobles, or hotels.  And I have no idea how much more expensive these are than regular SD cards since I don't usually buy those kinds of things, but mine is ~$48 for 4GB of space, which is plenty especially with the Endless Memory mode.  Even though I probably wouldn't have thought to get this for myself, I have to say that I've really enjoyed having it, and I love that my pics appear on my computer in the designated location and automatically organized in folders labeled by date.  I have an iMac so I can definitely vouch for its Mac compatibility!  More details are on their website, and here's their promo video:

  1. Wow, that's definitely something worth looking into. Often I have to download the pictures first (whenever I get to it!) and only then I realize how bad the pictures are or something in the background that I should have moved. Very interesting. thanks!

  2. This is a very neat techno toy :). If the husband and I aren't already thinking about investing in a dslr, I would definitely look into it.

  3. Your hubby's so thoughtful.

I have been meaning to get one of these but the concept is one foreign to me so I was hoping to do some research before making the purchase. Thanks for the review, it saved me a bit of time googling.

  5. What a very smart device! Thanks for sharing, I have no idea this thing exists. Boy talking about technology, i can't keep up! That is so sweet of your hubby.

  6. Definitely a worthwhile device for bloggers and others who often have to upload pics. I read a daily food/fitness blog in which the author uploads pics of every meal she eats. Lots of pics if you can imagine so she swears by this. I had no idea that it automatically deletes pics you've uploaded to your comp already. Since I'm just a blog reader and a hobby photographer when I'm on vacation, I'm sticking to my ~$15 regular SD cards, but this is definitely a nifty gadget to look into!

  7. SMART! I remember vaguely thinking about how smart I was for brainstorming something like this and these techies go and invent it possibly way before I even thought of it :) What a nifty way to be in sync with your pictures!

  9. curls and pearls - I've had those days too when every single picture turned out either too dark or too blurry. But this helps alot, I just quickly stop by the computer to glance through the pics after I'm done to see if I need to take any more.

Sydney - I think this works with DSLRs too... anything that can take SD memory cards. I know it works with my Dad's DSLR, which is a Nikon.

Elle - The concept is foreign to me too, but luckily I have hubby to do the research since he's into tech gadgets :)

Angie - Yup me too, I tend to be a hoarder & hold on to pics "just in case", only to run out of room as I'm trying to take more and have to stop to find ones to delete. This way I don't have to think about it!

Nelah - Hubby definitely scored some points on this one :)

R.L - That blog sounds like an interesting one! I didn't feel like I needed it when hubby first told me about it, but it sure has made life easier!

Rainy Days and Lattes - Haha I sometimes think I have great ideas for things only to find out that it's been done, and done way better lol. I guess I'll have to stick to my day job :)

SewPetiteGal - Next, I'll be dispensing free medical advice lol. One stop for all your needs! :P

  10. This is a super cool concept. It's like you have a little photo studio right in your home. I wonder what the range is on this thing lol...I like taking photos outdoors now (tho let's see how long that lasts as northeast winters kick in) but then again, even if that works then it defeats the purpose of trotting over to your desk to check out the pic quality.

Oh, and don't you love the huge imacs? I was against getting a non-laptop at first but now I always, always pick it over the macbook. The screen is the size of us!

  11. And by "non-laptop" I mean "desktop computer." Shakes head...why couldn't I think of that term?

  12. Thanks for sharing. i think I need to try this lol. It sounds like a great idea for those who need pics on the comp asap.

  14. Thanks for the review. We are glad you are enjoying the product.

The Eye-Fi card works with most cameras that take SDHC memory cards. You can check the list of cameras at http://support.eye.fi/cameras

You can store photos and videos on the Eye-Fi Card just like your regular memory card, so you can take photos and videos anywhere you like. Then, when you are within range of a Wi-Fi network that you have told the card to use, the photos & videos are automatically sent where you want them.

The range is about 45 feet indoors and 90 feet outdoors.

  15. Wow, that is such an awesome gadget and a sweet & thoughtful gift from the hubby! Thanks for the heads up and review! I'll definitely keep this in mind:) Thanks again for ur comment on my blog! I agree, the Talbots lookbook definitely has an Ann Taylor vibe, but I'm liking what I see hehe I'm not quite sure how the petite sizing runs in terms of dresses, pants, etc. I've only tried the trouser jeans they sent and it was still a tad too big for a 0 petite. You're definitely a size or two smaller than me, so perhaps their jeans might be a tad too large for you:) Oh, I've never seen the owls from Simplyvonne! I'll definitely check it out. I actually got my current header from Shabby Blogs:)
