Anthropologie - Size Fail

Anthropologie is a relatively new brand to me, but I keep seeing cute items pop up on several different blogs.  A quick browse at their website showed lots of really interesting designs... but their price point is higher than what I'm used to paying, so I haven't been able to bring myself to pull the trigger on anything yet - especially when I have no idea how their sizing runs.  So when I spotted a B&M store in Beverly Hills the other day while running an errand, I had to stop by!

Unfortunately, a quick walk through their relatively large store told me all I needed to know - that almost nothing will fit me from this brand.  I grabbed a couple of things that looked like they might work anyway, just to prove it to myself.

First was the Midnight's Spring Cardigan in XS:

This cardigan was styled on a display mannequin, and I really liked how the waist ties are encased within the sweater.

Sleeves were long, of course, but can be scrunched up.  The upper arms were baggy though, and the ribbed texture/material wasn't as nice as I'd expect from a $98 cardigan, so it was a pass.

I also tried the Flowing Tiers Tank in XS:

I try to stay away from ruffly tiers in general because they're usually unflattering and boxy on me, but this one seemed to have a slim shape (and plus it was right next to the sweater!).

Neckline and armholes were too low, and again I wasn't blown away despite a hefty $68 price tag.  This wasn't too hard to walk away from.

I usually have a pretty low threshold for "trying on" when I'm shopping, because you never know how things look on the body vs. on the rack.  But despite scouring the entire store including a whole second floor of sales racks, I couldn't find anything else that even came close to my size and hence worth trying on.  I suppose my wallet is relieved, but I am a little sad since they do offer some really neat designs and interesting items.  I do wish they would add XXS or 00 sizing, especially in petites!

  1. I really like Anthropologie's clothes too because they're very classy and have poise. I like their display decorations too (mall in stl has their store right at the entrance) but everything costs an arm and a leg x_x It's almost a good thing that things don't fit for us sometimes or we'd be reallly broke xD Unfortunately I tend to snap up any shoe that just-about-fits or comes in 5's. Downside to being smaller than the rest of fatty America >:( !

  2. I have heard about Anthro but do not own anything from them. I stopped by the store once in the past and ran to the same problems you've had. Prices are much higher than I typically paid. Sizes are not petite-friendly. They do have 00 and XXS in stores but not too many. The only I like about this store is their design. Every piece of clothing looks like a piece of art and the material seems to hold up well.

  3. Prices are definitely high, almost always too high for the kind of things they sell, but I am a few sizes bigger than you so I rarely have trouble finding things that fit. That said, they do have some incredibly cute things that inevitably go on sale, I wouldn't write them off just yet. For the right price maybe your awesome seamstress can get to work. I for one really like that ruffle tank on you.

  4. I think that store is sooo cute. I want everything in the store, but not for the price. LOL! Excellent post! :) I am in the LA area too!

  5. I took my first trip to Anthro a couple of weeks ago and I love the style of the clothes, but I agree, the price point made me nervous! I found a couple of blazers in the sale section that fit me decently but my husband gave me the thumbs down - I think they were too "different" from what he's used to seeing me in. And even on sale I thought it was still expensive for something I wouldn't get a lot of use out of. I'm jealous of the other bloggers who pull it off so well though, so I may keep browsing here and there.

  6. Sorry to hear about your 1st experience at Anthro... Like the other Elle I'm also a size bigger so tops aren't too difficult to fit for me. Just the pants. :) Every once in a while I'll find something on sale from Anthro but I'm more interested in their candles and decor than anything. hehe. But they do provide some really nice outfit inspiration online and at the store though.

  7. How I wish Anthro carries xxs and 00p, too :).

  8. My taste is so different from the majority of people ~ I'm one of the very few that doesn't care for Anthro >_<

It must be so frustrating to never find clothing that fits your petite frame! Have you ever shopped in Nordstrom Savvy dept? I find that the size XS of many of the brands they carry fit petites pretty well! And both BCBG and Maxstudio size XXS tend to run smaller than brands like Loft or Anthro.

  9. I agree! I love anthro, but their XS runs large in general. I've gotten lucky with a few cardigans though. It's a hit or miss most times for me.

  10. I do love the anthropologie brand, it's too bad that it runs a bit bigger.

  11. I love Anthro styles, but same problem as you. I walk around looking for things that look small, but their smallest size is probably at least a size or two too big for me. =(

  12. This is sad, because that tank is actually really cute.

  13. I always walk past this store but never actually went in....thier prices scare me and now that i know the sizes are so big....no go for me!

  14. I really like that tiered ruffle tank on you - definitely not boxy! I'm used to wearing tanks underneath various shirts (or shortening the straps myself) so the neckline / armholes can be fixed. However, I'm with you on the price - I wouldn't buy a tank for $68 unless I LOVED it and HAD TO HAVE IT. I think I've been spoiled by all the crazy Loft / Banana Republic sales...the final sale Loft had a few weeks ago was heaven :)

  15. That is too bad about the fit. I love Anthropologie! I make a special shopping day trip for that store every now and then, because (like you said) it takes me so long to navigate for things, and find the right fit. I usually have better luck with their sweaters and skirts.

I also suggest that you check out their website for jewelry in the sale section. There are some crazy mark-downs!

Have you tried the Petite Flutter Trim Blouson top from LOFT? I have it in XXSP and the fit is perfect, especially the armholes. It is not as poofy at the bottom on me like it is on the website. It reminds me of that blouse from Anthro that you tried on.

  16. I agree with you, they run big on sizes. They are definitely not petite friendly. Their online store has some petite selections though (very limited) if you really like their style, but probably not worth the money they are charging. I did purchased a sweater on sale last weekend. I will definitely show it on a future post.

  17. sophia - I kind of gave up on department stores a long time ago... could never find anything that fits outside of the kids or juniors department. And plus I always feel like I'm not getting the best deal since they always have sales and coupons and stuff that I don't keep track of.

SewPetiteGal - I get spoiled by crazy coupons and sales too! I feel like I should be able to get BR/Gap/Ann Taylor/LOFT items at 40% off all the time! :P

Michelle - I did try that LOFT top, and while I liked the top part, the length was way too long on me (I didn't even realize it's supposed to be worn blousson style!)

Vicky - Can't wait to see it!

  20. Anthropologie definitely is so classy and stylish. But unfortunately pricey and only normal sizes. By the way, what size jeans are you wearing in the above pics?

  21. R.L. - Those are GapKids jeans size 12, in a very light wash which makes them very casual-looking. They also have a short inseam and are slightly loose-fitting but REALLY comfortable, so I wear them with flats when I'm running around a lot.

  22. I really like their home stuff actually..i haven't purchase anything from them but I love looking thru their home decor to get inspirations

  23. I am like a lot of the other ladies commenting, I like the clothes, but can not find much that fits and suits my budget. No doubt the clothes are well made, and so they should be based on the price. I end up finding other items in the store that are non-clothing related for my home.
